Composite fillings
Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that bonds directly to enamel and dentine, which means less healthy tooth needs to be removed than for an old-style amalgam filling. It is placed in layers and sculpted to the natural shape of the tooth, then hardened with light. The result is strong, sealed and invisible.
Replacing silver amalgam fillings
Many patients ask us to replace dark metal fillings for cosmetic reasons, or because the old filling has cracked or the tooth around it has broken. Where the cavity is large, an inlay, onlay or crown may protect the tooth better than a filling, and we will advise honestly which is right.

How long do white fillings last?
Seven to ten years on average, often longer for small fillings. Good hygiene and regular checks help them last.
Are white fillings as strong as silver?
Modern composites are strong enough for back teeth and, because they bond to the tooth, they support it rather than wedging it apart as amalgam can.
