What a dental implant actually is

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone where the root of a missing tooth used to be. Over a few months the bone fuses to it, a process called osseointegration, and it becomes as stable as a natural root. A custom crown is then fixed on top.

The result looks, feels and works like your own tooth. You eat what you like, brush as normal, and nobody can tell. Unlike a bridge, nothing is done to the healthy teeth either side. Unlike a denture, nothing moves.

He also holds a consultant appointment at King’s College Hospital.

That matters most in the cases other clinics turn away: worn bone, sinus proximity, previous failed implants. Bone grafting, sinus lifts and complex extractions are all done here, under one roof, by the same surgeon who places your implant and sees you through to the final fit.

What it costs, and what the number includes

A single implant at Shirland starts at £3,000, and that figure covers the fixture, the abutment and the final crown. We publish it because the most common complaint we hear about implant pricing elsewhere is not that it was high, but that it moved: a headline figure for the screw alone, then the abutment, then the crown, then the scan. Your written plan lists every component with a price against it before you agree to anything.

Where a case needs bone grafting or a sinus lift, that is quoted separately and explained at the consultation rather than added later. The £250 consultation fee with Mr Aldaadaa is deducted from your treatment if you go ahead. Multiple teeth usually cost less per tooth than several single implants, because two implants can carry a three-unit bridge, and 0% finance over twelve months is available on the whole plan.

Who is not suitable, and what we do instead

Implants are not right for everyone, and we would rather tell you that at the consultation than halfway through. Active gum disease has to be treated and stabilised first, because an implant sits in the same bone that periodontitis destroys. Heavy smoking materially raises the failure rate and we will talk to you honestly about it. Uncontrolled diabetes, some bone medications and recent radiotherapy to the jaw all need medical liaison before we plan anything.

Where an implant is genuinely not the answer, the alternatives are a bridge using the teeth either side, or a well-made denture. Neither is a consolation prize. A three-unit bridge on healthy neighbouring teeth can last two decades, and modern implant-retained dentures give people who have worn loose plates for years a fixed result at a fraction of full-arch cost.

One tooth, several teeth or a whole arch

A single implant replaces one tooth without touching its neighbours. Two or more implants can carry a bridge across a run of missing teeth. If you wear a full denture, as few as two to four implants can lock it in place so it never slips again, and a fixed full-arch option gives you a complete set of teeth that stays in.
