Gingivitis and periodontitis
Gingivitis is early gum inflammation caused by plaque along the gumline: red, puffy gums that bleed when brushed. It is fully reversible with better cleaning and a hygiene visit. Left untreated it can progress to periodontitis, where the infection moves below the gum, destroys the bone that holds the teeth and eventually loosens them. Periodontitis cannot be reversed, but it can be halted and controlled for life.
Treatment
The cornerstone is a deep clean, also called root surface debridement, carried out under local anaesthetic one side of the mouth at a time. Tartar and bacteria are removed from below the gum so the tissues can heal and tighten around the teeth. We then re-measure your gums, and put you on a three-monthly maintenance programme, because in periodontitis the cleaning interval is what keeps the disease switched off.

Is bleeding when I brush normal?
No. Healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding is the earliest sign of gum disease and the best time to act.
Can gum disease be cured?
Gingivitis, yes, completely. Periodontitis can be stopped and controlled indefinitely with treatment and regular maintenance, though lost bone does not grow back.
Does deep cleaning hurt?
It is done under local anaesthetic so it is comfortable. Gums may be tender for a day or two afterwards.
