Dental check-ups
Most dental problems are silent until they are expensive. A check-up finds them while they are small, and tells you honestly what, if anything, needs doing.

What we check
Every examination covers your teeth, gums, existing fillings and crowns, your bite and jaw joints, and the soft tissues of your mouth, including a screen for oral cancer. Digital x-rays, taken only when needed, show decay between teeth and bone levels that cannot be seen by eye.
You will see what we see. We photograph anything of note and show it to you on screen, explain the options, and give you a written plan with prices before any treatment. If nothing needs doing, we will tell you that too.
How often you actually need one
The old advice to come every six months was never based on evidence, and NICE guidance now sets the interval according to risk: as long as two years for an adult with healthy gums, no decay and no grinding, and as short as three months for someone whose gums are unstable or whose decay rate is high. We will tell you which end of that range you are on and why, rather than defaulting everyone to six months.
Children are different. Their enamel is thinner, decay moves faster and habits are still forming, so most children are seen every six months or annually. If we put you on a longer interval it is because your mouth has earned it, and we will say so.
What happens if we find something
You get a written plan with a price against every item and a note of what is urgent, what can wait and what is worth watching rather than treating. Not every dark spot on an x-ray needs a filling; some are static and are better monitored than drilled. We would rather show you the image and explain the choice than present you with a total.
Nothing is booked in the same appointment unless you ask for it. Take the plan away, compare it, come back. If a second opinion would help you decide, we will say that too.
New to Shirland?
New patients are welcome at both practices and you do not need to be registered anywhere else. Book online or call and we will find a time that suits, including evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. Both our receptionists speak English and Arabic.

How much is a check-up?
An adult examination is from £86.63 including any x-rays needed. Children aged 1–12 are from £45.
Do you accept NHS patients?
Shirland Dental is a private practice. We keep our fees fair and offer monthly plans so that good dentistry stays affordable.
How long does a check-up take?
Thirty minutes. That is long enough to take and read your x-rays, examine your teeth, gums and soft tissues properly, and talk through what we found without rushing you back out.
Are x-rays included in the price?
Yes. The £86.63 check-up includes any digital x-rays we need. We do not charge separately for them, and digital sensors use a fraction of the radiation of the old film.
Can I book a check-up on a Sunday?
Yes. Both practices are open seven days a week, 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Saturday and 9am to 4pm Sunday, and check-ups are available across all of those hours.
I haven’t been to a dentist in years. Will I be judged?
Never. A large number of our patients had not seen a dentist for a decade or more before they came to us. We meet you where you are and go at your pace.
